Scared of the statistics


You should bring with you a printed copy of a quantitative paper or piece of research that you have found difficult to understand or analyse due to the statistics and use of mathematical terminology.

The aim of this workshop is to provide you with a basic introduction to reading and interpreting statistics in quantitative research. You can expect to develop study skills that can be applied to your own research or critiques.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the session you will will have:

  1. Learnt how to read a paper and developed techniques for understanding quantitative research.

  2. Improved their understanding of key terminology and should feel confident in their ability to interpret this information

  3. Discussed the meaning and significance of using statistics in research

  4. Established the value of statistics in research and considered how they can critique this effectively.

  5. Had the opportunity to ask questions related to statistics within quantitative research

  6. Had a demonstration of any Apps which could aid their studies (note this is not software for the production of statistics or analysis of data)

  7. Further resources if mathematical support is required will be signposted

I am the Mathematics and Statistics Adviser, starting in August 2017.


I have a degree in Mathematics (1995) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Mathematics (1996) from the University of York. In September 1996 I began a secondary school teaching career and taught Mathematics, IT and Engineering to students aged 11 to 19. I have held teaching jobs at Great Cornard Upper School (1996-2009), Stowmarket High School (2009-2010), Suffolk One Sixth Form (2010-2014 & 2016-2017) and Ipswich High School for Girls (2014-2016). I have lots of experience at teaching pre-GCSE, GCSE, A-Level (pure, statistics and mechanics) and functional skills.


My role at the University of Suffolk is to support in mathematical and statistical content of the courses run here. This can be done through 1 to 1 sessions and through in-course and general workshops. Whether it be help with calculations, working with number, metrics, analysing data, using spss or just improving general mathematical skill and confidence then do look to book a help session.
