Searching for Information - using University of Suffolk resources (held in A004)

Aim

Attendees at the workshop will be able to access information efficiently and effectively.  Understand the different types of information available to them and the characteristics of each.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session students will:

  • Be able to give examples of the services and support offered by Learning Services

  • Understand the nature and characteristics of different types of material, including:
    Books, Journals (scholarly) and popular trade journals, Newspapers, Webpage

  • Know how the first point of access for University of Suffolk Libraries on the MyUniversity of Suffolk page

  • Be able to search for a book in Summon

  • Be able to search for a journal article in Summon, understand how filters can be applied to limit and refine searches

  • Be able to access the article once in the database, print, email or download

  • Clarify any problems, issues identified during the session

Outline of session

The session will include the following

  • In small groups match different characteristics to the type of material that you think it belongs to

  • Participants are given a title to search for from their reading list asked to find out the class number and how many copies there are by linking through to the record in Heritage.
