Referencing is one of the distinguishing features of academic writing, but what is it? Why and when do we do it?

No prior knowledge is required for this session.

Come along for your quick-start guide to the practice of referencing.

Aim

To introduce students to the practice of referencing, as well as the resources to support them with referencing throughout their course.

Learning

The end of this session you will be able to:

  1. Explain the purpose of referencing for students and academics
  2. Compose in-text citations and reference lists for commonly used academic sources (books, journal articles and websites)
  3. Recognise occasions when referencing is required in academic writing
  4. Identify of resources to support you with referencing at UoS
