Module Organisation, Structure and Narrative in Brightspace

"[D]esigning online instruction with explicit elements of narrative and student agency aids student learning and strengthens their engagement in the course" (Lindgren and McDaniel, 2012).

Duration: 60 mins

Audience: Academic and Professional Services Staff

Format: In-person

WHAT THIS SESSION COVERS

In this session, we will look at structuring your Brightspace module with folders, subfolders and topics along with best practice methods for clear naming conventions.

We will also explore ways you can give your modules a sense of narrative, voice and personality.

PREPARE FOR THIS SESSION

Before attending, please ensure that you’ve completed the accompanying activities, as there will not be time within the session to cover the workflows set out in the training materials. If you have tried to follow any workflows but are struggling, please email learningservices@uos.ac.uk to request support.

Link to pre-session materials.

WHAT WE WILL DO IN THIS SESSION

Recap the structural components of any module or course area in Brightspace

Look at examples of folder, subfolder and topic structure, looking for good (and not-so-good) practice

Analyse the names of folders and topics in terms of how easily a student can find what they’re looking for

Write topic descriptions and linking text for some topics in your module
